Musikmesse 2016: Universal Audio partners with Fender to bring classic amps to UAD and Apollo systems

MUSIKMESSE 2016: Universal Audio has announced that it's entering into a partnership with Fender that will see the guitar manufacturer's "legendary tone" being brought to the UAD and Apollo platforms.

This means that we'll be seeing Fender-branded UAD plugins in the not too distant future, with some of the company's classic amps seemingly set to be emulated. These will join existing amp plugins from the likes of Marshall, Chandler and Softube.

"We're thrilled to welcome Fender to the UAD platform," said Bill Putnam, CEO and founder of Universal Audio. "Putting Fender's legendary tone on our recording products has been a goal for some time. Both UA and Fender have a 50-plus year heritage in music and recording products, so we're very excited about what we can accomplish together."

"This is an exciting endeavour for Fender, and Universal Audio is the best group to bring the essence of our classic amps to a digital platform," said Shane Nicholas, Director of Product Development Amplifiers. "We look forward to offering players of all types the opportunity to utilise our products in their musical expression."

No specific products have yet been announced, but we'll bring you more news when we get it.

Musikmesse 2016: Yamaha reveals "revolutionary" TransAcoustic acoustic guitars with built-in reverb and chorus effects

MUSIKMESSE 2016: We know and love Yamaha's L Series acoustic guitars, but for 2016, the company has taken the format and added something entirely new with TransAcoustic: built-in effects that you can hear without amplification.

Essentially, an actuator is fitted inside each guitar, and vibrates in response to string vibrations - these vibrations are then carried by the body of the guitar and the air inside and out, generating reverb and chorus sounds without the need for external effects.

It sounds a little like science fiction, but apparently, the concept works, and three side-mounted knobs adjust the intensity of the effect and line-out volume level, as well as providing on/off control.

Elsewhere, the guitars feature a modified non-scalloped bracing design to enhance low-end, while the solid Engelmann spruce tops are treated with Yamaha's ARE process for a more vintage quality.

The guitars' rosewood sides are paired with five-ply mahogany and rosewood necks, plus ebony fingerboards, while an SRT piezo pickup provides the guitar's plugged-in tones. In addition, a redesigned battery box is integrated with the guitar's endpin, reducing acoustic sound loss.

Consider us impressed. Two models will be available initially: the LL-TA dreadnought and LS-TA concert, available in Vintage Tint and Brown Sunburst finishes for £986 eachfrom August. Suffice to say, we can't wait to get our hands on these.

MUSIKMESSE 2016: Thomas Blug, creator of the BluGuitar Amp1 and German session whiz, has revealed his latest innovation: the BluBOX speaker emulator.

Packing 16 virtual cabinets - including models of cabs from Marshall, Vox, Mesa/Boogie and Fender, as well as BluGuitar's own NanoCab and FatCab - the BluBOX utilises convolution technology to accurately replicate the nuances of each cab, while latency is less than one millisecond to retain playing feel.

A mic position knob allows players to go from the edge to the centre of the emulated speaker cone, and sounds can be output via 1/4" and XLR line out, with ground lift. Speaker-through jacks allow the BluBOX to be used with traditional guitar cabs, too.

Looks handy for playing direct to a PA or silent recording - the BluGuitar BluBOX is available from Q4 for £219/€269/$319.

MUSIKMESSE 2016: Radial Engineering's line of switching solutions is quite, quite dizzying, but that hasn't stopped the company adding to its well-established Tonebone range with two new line selectors: the Headlight guitar amp selector and Bumper compact instrument selector.

The Headlight gives guitarists the ability to sequentially activate up to four amps using a single footswitch, while a second footswitch mutes the signal for silent tuning or instrument changes - it can also be used to turn all four amps on at once.

Building on the Tonebone legacy, the Headlight packs Radial's Class-A buffer circuit, as well as Drag control load correction to maintain the instrument's natural tone; each output promises to be hum-free, too, with switchable ground lifts.

Radial's Tonebone Headlight is available soon for $169.99, and can be powered by any standard 9V power supply.

Need to run four instruments into a single amp but lacking in pedalboard real estate? The Bumper is the answer, with a single footswitch for cycling between instruments.

Like the Headlight, the Bumper offers Radial's Class-A buffer circuit and Drag control load correction, but also features a buffered tuner output, volume trim pots and trim switches to adjust for passive and active instruments.

The Radial Tonebone Bumper is available soon for $169.99, and runs from any standard 9V power supply.

Spoiler: Radial MR5 MIDI Signal Translator Press-Release

The MR5 is a MIDI signal translator that allows you to use a MIDI controller to control the JX44, JX42 or any other Radial products that use the JR5 footswitch. The MR5 converts the MIDI data stream from the controller to the same data format used by the JR5, allowing the musician to handle instrument and amplifier switching with a sequencer, control pedal or any other MIDI control setup.

The MR5's MIDI input and thru allow it to be daisy-chained with other MIDI devices. Dedicated 'Guitars' and 'Amps' XLR outputs connect to the JR5 inputs on the JX44 and other Radial products. A side access DIP switch enables the user to dedicate the MR5 to a single MIDI channel, or select Omni mode. Instrument switching on the JX44 or JX42 can be controlled by MIDI control changes while the amplifier switching on the JX44 can be controlled via control changes, program changes or both simultaneously. The MR5 can be used in conjunction with the JR5 so the musician can still enjoy the convenience of a stage remote alongside MIDI control.

XLR cables connect the MR5 to the JR5 inputs on various Radial products, while MIDI equipment connects with standard 5-pin DIN cables. Because the host Radial product automatically powers the MR5, no external power supply is required.
