"Da Hui (also known as the Black Shorts) is a group of local surfers from Hawaii. The group was formed in 1976 by Eddie Rothman, Squiddy, Perry Dane and other braddahs as a reaction to their belief that the Haoles (= Ausländer [Anm. d. Chefs]) were disrespecting their culture and taking all the waves.
The group's first major show of force was during a 1976 surf contest being held by Fred Hemmings, in which they were not contestants. Rothman and associates paddled out during the second heat and caught waves, as if no contest was taking place. All attempts by Hemmings to have Rothman and company removed from the water by force were met with refusal: people were too scared of an immediate beating or later reprisals. Da Hui reputedly made this demonstration of force because competitions were being planned without consulting local surfing elders or including Hawaiian surfers in those competitions."
