At war with Self

At war with Self kenn ich nun schon etwas länger, und hab mir die CD inzwischen schon häufiger angehört: Torn between Dimensions. Jetzt kann ich sagen, dass ihre Inhalte (Kampf mit sich selbst, Selbstzweifel, innerliche Emotionskocherei etc pp) wirklich gut umgesetzt sind, wenn man bedenkt, wie schwer das eigentlich ist.

Als ich die CD das erste mal hörte, dachte ich, es ist ziemlich fade, langweilig, nichts sagend und ohne wirkliche Höhepunkte aber mittlerweile bin ich soweit, dass ich glaube, dass einige Lieder auf dem Album schlicht keinen Höhepunkt beinhalten sollen! Oder, dass das jeweils behandelte Thema des Liedes einen Höhepunkt und mehr Drive gar nicht zulässt, und das ist vollkommen in Ordnung

Ihr könnt euch den Opener "The God Interface" auf www.glennsnelwar.com runterladen, genauso wie ein paar Probe-mp3s vom neuen Album "Acts of God", welches noch nicht erschienen ist. Klar ist jedoch, dass es viel anders und abwechslungsreicher sein wird als das relativ eintönige Torn between Dimensions.

Letzteres ist übrigens keine Kritik am Album - man kann es nur nicht jeden Tag hören und es passt eben nicht zu bestimmten Anlässen, z.b. wenn man unbedingt energiegeladene, fröhliche Musik hören will
Doch es bietet viel Interpretationsfreiraum, finde ich und lädt ein, über sich und die Umwelt nachzudenken..

An dieser Stelle sei auch auf http://www.babyblaue-seiten.de/index.php?albumId=5610&content=review&left=alpha&top=reviews&alpha=a hingewiesen. Diese Rezi ist meiner Meinung gut gelungen und die CD ist auch kein Meisterwerk oder ein Meilenstein, aber es ist empfehlenswert für Leute, die gerne instrumentale Musik konsumieren, mit akustischer, elektrischer Gitarre und schönen sphärischen Sounds.

The God Interface ist übrigens nicht das Paradebeispiel fürs ganze Album.

Einflüsse OSI und Gordian Knot? Das klingt für mich als Kevin Moore-fan doch schon mal viel versprechend, mal schauen, ob ich irgendwo eine Möglichkeit finde, mal reinzuhören.

also ich halte diese cd auch für eine sehr gute... vor allem zeigt marc zonder endlich mal warum der ehemalige fates-warning-mitstreiter einer der unterschätztesten schlagzeuger des prog-genres ist. fantastische soundscapes, die sich nicht unhöflich aufdringlich in den vordergrund drängen, das gesamte album strahlt eine introvertiertheit aus, die zusätzlich unterstreicht warum die band "at war with self" heisst - und die instrumentalen leistungen sind schlichtweg grandios!
ich bin schon sehr gespannt auf das neue album dieser gruppe, vor allem die änderung der stilistischen ausrichtung erwarte ich mit spannung.

ansichtssache . ich kenn´ keine band die wirklich vergleichbare musik macht.

ich hatte mir das album gekauft nachdem ich attention deficit´s "the idiot king" schon lange in der heavy-rotation hatte und war beim ersten, zweiten hören schon ein wenig enttäuscht! das hat sich dann aber relativ schnell gelegt . es ist halt doch keine "leichte kost".

Ich finde diese langen, recht langatmigen sphärischen teile (track 6 und 7 wenn ich mich recht erinner) für einen schwachpunkt. ich überspring die titel meistens, hab die cd aber auch erst ein paar wochen

mit glenn snelwar steh ich übrigens in kontakt, der kerl ist verdammt nett und nimmt sich viel zeit zum beantworten der post - zudem ist die neue page auf meinen wunsch entstanden wirklich eine ausnahme, der mann! übrigens ist er von beruf chemiker und er meinte, dass sehr viele seiner einfälle auf der arbeit in seinen kopf kommen :screwy:

die neue stilrichtung ist auf den mp3-samples schon erkennbar - der stilbruch ist insofern waghalsig, als das viele neue ideen eingebracht werden und stile vermengt werden, die ganz offen wenig zueinander passen (ich höre da grade Threads, keyboards, lustige hintergrundmucke und dann diese extrem verzerrten gitarren! genial!!). ich werd mir das album auf jeden fall sofort kaufen und bin jetzt schon begieriger drauf als aufs nächste DT-album (sowieso...)
Snelwar meint aber, dass diese Samples schon etwas älter sind und er mit denen noch gar nicht zufrieden sei. dementsprechend wird das album noch einiges ausgereifter sein


Vergleichbare Musik hab ich übrigens auch @beau delay: Gordian Knot, OSI wie Hoodgesaargh schon sagte. Desweitern find ich gewisse dinge von Anekdoten, KC oder auch After Crying für ähnlich - jedoch nicht durchgängig so "introvertiert" wie At war with Self.
Auf der ersten Scheibe von Gordian Knot war Snelwar ja auch dabei und die Platte ist ebenfalls ganz gut mit At war with Self vergleichbar, imo

Freut mich sehr, dass es hier Leute gibt, die diese Mucke auch so schön finden!

For Acts of God, Glenn asked me to do drums for two of the more heavy instrumental tracks. Other major contributions to these tracks were made by Damon Trotta. Here are the preview versions:

Press biography AT WAR WITH SELF - ACTS OF GOD

At War With Self sounds more like a psychological diagnosis than a band... an appropriate description in the biography for the debut of the project and its first release, Torn Between Dimensions, led by Glenn Snelwar (Gordian Knot), featuring Michael Manring (Michael Hedges, Attention Defecit) and Mark Zonder (Fates Warning, Temple Within). The instrumental trio created an amalgam of tight-knit compositions encompassing progressive rock, metal, jazz, ambient and classical stylings, often within the boundaries of each composition. The end result was critically acclaimed and continues to grow a following as word of mouth of the project expands.

For Acts of God, the second release from the At War With Self project, Snelwar has desired to create a set of compositions with the intentions of living up to the label 'progressive' by dramatically changing almost every facet of the project while staying true to the underlying inspiration of the project's inception - to combine disparate styles and create music with no boundaries. No better choice than Damon Trotta as a co-writer and bassist to create what is sure to be as intriguing a release as Torn Between Dimensions. Trotta's background ranges from co-founder of metal acts Non-Fiction and System Addict, to the funk outfit Vehicle and has worked with the likes of Bernie Worell and Isaac Hayes. Prior to that, Snelwar and Trotta were in a progressive hardcore/metal trio with Rodney Zodda. Trotta, Snelwar and Zodda on percussion are here and back to their roots, with some added influences. With Trotta on bass, vocals, synths and programming and Snelwar on guitars, mandolin and synths, the duo is assisted by Sluggo's Goon Music labelmates James vonBuelow (guitars), Steve Decker (drums), Mark Sunshine(vocals), Dave Archer (synths) and Manfred Dikkers (drums) to create some truly stunning, inspired progressive music.

Torn Between Dimensions had a warm, organic feel as the all-instrumental interplay of Snelwar, Manring and Zonder created a complex, but introspective, set of related compositions. For Acts of God, that introspection is turned outward in the form of a cold stare at conflicts and resolutions prompted by recent world events. From the intensity and imagery-invoking 911 and Martyr, to the elated solace present in No Place and Ursa 5, to the desolation of End in Blue and Refugee, Acts of God has managed to strike a balance of emotions that once again run the gamut from elation and warmth to fear and horror.

Snelwar describes his collaboration with Trotta as the latest incarnation of At War With Self: "What's so amazing to me about Acts of God is that the vocals lend themselves perfectly to this set of compositions. To change focus from an all-instrumental project to a set of songs mostly containing vocals has strengthened the idea that At War With Self can successfully morph, live up to its name and push the boundaries from one release to the next. That, together with the heavy intertwining of funk and electronic styles with metal and progressive ideas really make this something unique - add to that the ability to get all of the musicians from the label to contribute tremendously in their own way without limitations on what they do - who all come from different backgrounds with vastly different styles - the project took on a life of it's own, yet stayed true to the original idea of combining disparate styles effectively and with incredible intensity.

Acts of God will be released early 2007, on Sluggo's Goon Music.
