BTW, zum Thema Kappen abnehmen:
Many famous players, including such greats as Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield and Jimmy Page, traditionally removed the metal covers from their humbucking pickups to get greater dynamics from the now exposed open coils. If one were lucky enough to be performing this operation on a late-fifties Les Paul Standard, zebra coils (one black bobbin and one crème bobbin) just might be hiding underneath. The anomaly of zebra coils, which lasted only a short while during this period, was due to a manufacturing glitch. Simply put, not enough black vinyl dye was available to the injection molding company that provided plastic bobbins to Gibson. This resulted in a few shipments of crème bobbins being put in the supply chain instead of the usual black ones.
No harm done. The metal pickup covers, which fit over the bobbins completely, encapsulated them and were never intended to be removed anyway. The different hue of the plastic didnt affect the inner workings of the pickup, so all was right and good and just. Then players, following the lead of their heroes, began popping their covers off by the hundreds.
Soon, open-face zebra coils became a badge of honor for many players, signaling that their vintage Gibson hailed from the mythic, late-fifties era
