ASAT (What does it mean, stand for or represent?)
According to George Fullerton, ASAT is the name used in the day for Anti-SATellite weapons. G&L was using very similar kind of names, e.g. Invader. So in the end, ASAT is just a name and not so much an acronym as far as the guitar is concerned. And how many times has this been asked? Many, many, many, many, ..., etc., times.
George Fullerton explained that "ASAT just fit into our use of military names". Having been in the U.S. military for most of the Leo-era years, the only name that I recognize from military hardware was
Skyhawk (an attack plane the Navy and Marines used in the early 80s, which flew from bases near Fullerton). I guess
Interceptor might count, as being a class of military aircraft, and
Invader has kind of a military ring."
"One of the original names under consideration for Leo's new Telecaster-style guitar was LaCaster orLeCaster. This is an example of a prototype for that modelname dated May 1985, which was the first month of production for the Broadcaster. Interestingly, there is a LeCaster decal headstocklogo
under the LaCaster decal. It appears, that G&L applied the LeCaster decal with a small G&L logo, and rather than using a new neck, simply sprayed black finish over the existing decal and applied the LeCaster decal with normal size G&L logo."
"The
Broadcaster is the most famous of the "rare" models made by G&L. It was introduced in mid-1985 and produced through March1986 with a total production run of 869 guitars. This Telecaster-inspired model was designed by Dale Hyatt, G&L Marketing Director.G&L was losing money and the guitar buying public was spending its money on traditional designs. Dale Hyatt's marketing strategy was sound and, despite
Leo Fender's hesitance to re-visit the past with a Tele-style model, the Broadcaster proved to be highly successful. The Broadcaster only came in one finish: black with black hardware. It could be ordered with an ebony or
maple fingerboard and, of the 869 Broadcasters produced, only 308 were made with maple fingerboards. One very special featureof the Broadcaster is, that all of them were
signed by Leo Fender himself. Leo used the Broadcaster name on his first two-pickup solidbody electric guitar in 1950, but Gretsch was using that name for its Broadkaster line of drums and requested Fender to stop using it. Fender complied and renamed it the Telecaster. History “repeated” itself at G&L. In a brilliant marketing ploy Dale Hyatt convinced Leo to use the Broadcaster name again for his new guitar, knowing that Gretsch or Fender would once again request that the name not be used. Interestingly,
neither Gretsch nor Fender held trademark rights to the Broadcaster / Broadkaster name at that time. Nevertheless, the idea was simple: G&L would produce as many Broadcasters as possible (up to 1500 maximum), before a lawsuit was filed, at which time production would cease. G&L never intended to produce the Broadcaster as a regular model, since it would have been difficult for Leo Fender to personally inspect and sign every unit made. The plan worked perfectly and G&L produced and sold 869 Broadcasters. Several new names were considered, including
LaCaster and LeCaster, until settling on the “ASAT” moniker in March 1986."
Die Music Man Sabre ist ein weiteres Beispiel: "Die
North American F-86 Sabre war ein
einstrahliges Jagdflugzeug des
US-amerikanischen Herstellers
North American Aviation.
Die
North American F-100 Super Sabre (auch genannt
Hun) war ein
einstrahliges Kampfflugzeug aus
US-amerikanischer Produktion."
"The Legacy was the first new guitar model produced by G&L after its acquisition
by BBE in 1992 and was meant to offer a more traditional S-type guitar. It used a mix of old and new features. Old features include the S-500 body and neck, veener fingerboard, hardware, PTB circuit, and
Sperzeltuners with split shafts. The new features included a satin headstockfinish, semi-gloss neck finish, slightly different neck carve behind the nut, "bathtub" pickup cavity route, taller and narrower frets, Strat-style
controlknobs and of course, the Duncan pickups."
"The
George Fullerton Model was introduced in 1995. This model has its roots in the same ancestral idea, that produced the Legacy guitar. The Fullerton is a tribute to George Fullerton's work at Fender, Music Man, and G&L specifically his contributions to the Fender Stratocaster. The Fullerton was originally designed as a '57 Stratocaster clone, but this strict configuration quickly changed, when a slab rosewood fingerboard was made an option. Vintage narrow frets are standard on the model as well. According to G&L researcher Paul Bechtoldt, the pickup design was based on the blueprints drawn by Mr. Fullerton in 1954 for the Fender Stratocaster, but it appears, that these pickups are identical to the G&L alnico slug units found in the Legacy. The first production run of Fullertons in April and May 1995 had huge V-shaped necks. These necks took significantly longer to make, so G&L switched to an oval shape neck beginning in June 1995, though the large V-neck was still available through 1996."
