have a question for you…
How many inputs do you really need to record great drums?
Eight?
Four?
Two?One?
We went into
Sensible Music with a slightly mad idea. Audient claim they use the same quality mic preamps across their entire iD range, from the tiny desktop units right up to the flagship rack models.
So instead of arguing on forums…
We tracked a full song through
every single one.
And here’s where it gets interesting.
We didn’t just swap interfaces. We changed the drum setup each time:
- 8 mics through the iD48
- 8 mics via iD24 + expansion
- 4 mics on the iD44
- 2 mics on the iD14
- 1 mic… on the iD4
Yes. One mic.
And honestly?
The one-mic version completely surprised me.
This video isn’t just a gear comparison. It’s a masterclass in mic placement, decision-making, limitation, and how channel count changes your drum sound far more than price tags ever will.
If you:
- Record drums at home
- Wonder if your interface is “good enough”
- Are thinking about upgrading
- Or just love nerding out on drum tones
You are going to love this.

Then come back and tell me in the comments:
Which drum version do
you prefer?
8 mics?
4 mics?
2 mics?Or the single mic madness?
