Moin zusammen,

hier (nach einiger Kritik im Netz.) noch einmal der Vergleich Oberheim OB6 - Oberheim OB-X8 von "Starsky Carr"...
Patch matching isn't a spectator sport so it's a well boring start to the video . I've even missed the the initial settings to avoid people falling into a coma. BUT... Wow!! some of the grief I got about having one of them in mono in the original video !! KERPOW!! https://youtu.be/gxRzwKxpGnY Haha.. ah well, it can't all go smoothly every time. Anyway... yes it would have been better for them both to be in stereo.. BUT it actually made the OB6 sound blend better than it did in mono... watch and you'll see what I men. Having said that - I have got them closer here. What generally happens is if I can't get the sounds exact I'll show what the difference is. Here there IS a difference but not as stark as in the first mono/stereo mishap. For anyone offended by the OB6 not sounding as good.. I wasn't trying to make it sound worse. Sehr schönes Demo. Viele zeitgenössische Synthesisten fordern heute einen aufwändige Modmatrix. Die hat der Oberheim nicht, wenngleich er mehr an Bord hat als viele simpler gestrickte Achtziger Synths. Mir ist Crossmod das wichtigste Modul zur Klangformung. Das hat er, es brezelt den ohnehin mächtigen Grundsound nochmal spektakulär auf.

Hallo zusammen,

hier mein Fazit zum Video von "JimDaneker" Oberheim OB-X8 vs The Prophets (Prophet 5 & Rev 2).

Der Prophet 10 Rev. 4 ist und bleibt mein persönlicher Favorit. (fetzig, funky und direkt, kann aber auch dezent im Hintergrund "glänzen".)

Der Rev 2 ist m.M.n. für seinen Preis ein guter Deal, nach wie vor.

Der Oberheim OB-X8 kann so „sahnig“ wie seine berühmten Vorgänger aber für richtig überzeugendes „Panning“ gerade bei Pads fehlen mir noch ein paar mehr Stimmen.

Wozu?

Um Chancengleichheit herzustellen?

Das wäre ein Vergleich der hinkt. Ich habe mir den Take 5 (auch) genau wegen seines Stereo Ausgangs gekauft. Und wenn man die Oscs dann im Panning hört weiß man um dessen Mehrwert. Ein zeitgenössischer Synth muss sich heute mittels seiner Features gegen die Konkurrenz durchsetzen können, es sei denn man wünscht sich eine exakte Replik der Vergangenheit, und ob diese identisch klingt wird nach wie vor kontrovers diskutiert…..

Nichts desto trotz gefällt mir der Mono Sound des P5 extrem gut weil er warm und mit guter Autorität daher kommt. Ist letztlich auch eine Geschmacksfrage.

Nun, ich hätte mir beides gewünscht, also den Rev. 2 und den OB-X8 parallel auch mal in "Mono" erklingen zu lassen...
…zumal beide ja auch parallel einen Monoausgang haben.
Und wie ich bereits sagte zum Oberheim OB-X8 "für richtig überzeugendes „Panning“ gerade bei Pads fehlen mir noch ein paar mehr Stimmen."

Überhaupt, ist mir ein Monosignal bei Synthesizern i.d.R. lieber. Ich bevorzuge "Panning", erst einmal die Signale schön im Stereobild verteilen.
Genau überlegen, was platziere ich in der Stereo - Mitte, was links, rechts, halb links, halb rechts und so weiter...
Oder auch mal den Synth halb rechts, den reinen Hall aber ganz links, da kann man toben bis der Arzt kommt.
Ich bevorzuge einen sehr transparenten aufgeräumten Mix.

Mein Vorbild oder "Klangideal", entspricht also eher einem Großen Orchester. Wie sind die einzelnen Instrumentengruppen verteilt, wer sitzt wo und warum?
Also nicht nur einfach links, rechts usw. sondern wer sitzt z.B. weiter vorne, wer sitzt weiter hinten oder ganz vorne und ganz hinten?

Das alles hat auch mit Frequenzbereichen und Transienten zu tun.

und wie passend...von "JimDaneker"

Klar, viele Wege führen nach Rom und es ist so wie Du beschreibst ja auch eine Frage der Herangehensweise. Ich kann mir auch gut vorstellen, dass so ein aufwändiges Recording nochmal spezifischer klingt als ordinäres Panning via Stereoausgang.

Für mich als Gitarrist, der schon mit seinem Primärinstrument gut ausgelastet ist sind solche Features trotz Vorliebe für Vintage Synths heute willkommen.

Can u hear it ? My target on this video was to make them as close as i can and also, show some difference like the square wave without any setting in the page 2 in the obx8.

16.09.2022 Here are some of my programmed Pad and String sounds with some crazy LFO, Portamento in wide stereo mostly used of SEM Filter without any FX and processing. All sounds are recorded in stereo live without any overdubbing directly into the audio interface. As you can see, I was fiddling a bit with some Page 2 functions, like stereo settings, filter, LFO and portamento tricks. Thanks for watching. Guten Morgen zusammen.
Video von "synthlegends" Oberheim OB-X8 vs OB-Xa - all original factory presets
17.09.2022 In this video I played all factory presets of the OB-Xa, which are in the OB-X8 as well. I don't know, if they were accurately reprogrammed or just took as wav file into the cassette interface of the OB-X8. Most were really spot on. Here an there they are not, so it is mandatory to tweak a bit, like modulation rate, filter and envelopes. Some sounds were not equal in volume, I had to adjust. I recorded all in Mono using the Mono out of the OB-Xa and Stereo out pair (but with mono setting) from the OB-X8. The mono out has in my unit some hum. I will check it out with the distributor or I don't know what happened here. It's not much, but it's there. My unit is only borrowed for a review I have to do for a german music magazine. I am really impressed by the OB-X8 and it's a great substitute for the very rare and expensive vintage units. The sound is around 90 to 95 percent perfect. Some minimal variances you can hear in the original, maybe due to perfect circuit of the smd-chips instead of old through hole technology with lots of calibration pots (the OB-Xa hat around 150 of them!).
